

Zuri, the adorable main character of the story, is the face seen on every bottle encouraging kids to feel confident about their hair. It’s inspired by Cherry’s film and includes a moisturizing spray, a nourishing conditioner, a 2-in-1 detangler and refreshing spray and styling curl cream. Teaming up with longtime supporter Dove, which is a co-founder of the CROWN Coalition seeking to pass the very important CROWN Act to end hair discrimination, the brand has crafted the Dove Kids Hair Love Collection. Cherry is now preparing for the project to have an impact in the realm of the very topic it highlights - the textured hair of Black and brown kids.


“Upon Hair Love’s early success, my hope was that the film would increase Black representation in mainstream animation, but I had no idea of the extent it would increase representation in media and culture as a whole,” he tells ESSENCE.

Picked up by Sony Pictures Animation, the project has not only inspired, but it was also nominated for an Oscar for Animated Short Film in 2020. It is our hope that this project will inspire. This story was born out of seeing a lack of representation in mainstream animated projects, and also wanting to promote hair love amongst young men and women of color. This sounds simple enough, but we soon come to find that Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own. The short is about an African American father who is learning to style his daughter Zuri’s hair for the first time.ĭespite having long locks, Stephen has been used to his wife doing his daughter’s hair, so when she is unavailable right before a big event, Stephen will have to figure it out on his own.
